Gardai rush to scene as man found dead after house fire in Co Mayo

A pensioner has tragically died after a house fire in Co Mayo.

The incident happened at a home in the Glenlara area near Belmullet on Sunday.

Emergency services rushed to the blaze where they found the body of the man in his 70s.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man's remains were brought to nearby Mayo University Hospital for a post mortem.

While officers have now preserved the house for a technical examination.

It is understood that foul play is not suspected at this time.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí and Emergency Services attended the scene of a fire at a residence in Glenlara, Co. Mayo on Sunday, 18th April 2021.

"The body of a man, aged in his 70s, was recovered from the house.

"The scene has been preserved for a technical examination."
