Gardai rushed to the scene as a body was recovered from the water in Co Galway.
The discovery was made at the Salthill Prom on Wednesday evening.
Emergency services were called to the scene by a member of the public, with the RNLI recovering the remains from the water.
Officers say the body has not been identified but is understood to be that of a male.
The deceased has been brought to University Hospital College Galway for a post-mortem.
A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí were alerted to the discovery of a body, understood to be that of a male, in the water at Salthill Prom, on Wednesday 10th January 2021.
"The body was removed from the water by the RNLI and has been taken to University Hospital College Galway for post mortem.
"The deceased has yet to be identified.
"No further information is available at this time."
