Gardai rush to aid of staff as 'intoxicated' man enters shop without face mask

Gardai rushed to the aid of shop staff after an "intoxicated" man entered a supermarket without a face mask.

The incident happened in the Bailieborough in Co Cavan on Saturday.

Officers said the man entered the store without a face covering, and was more than 5km from home.

They added that he was "aggressive" towards shop staff as he attempted to purchase alcohol, and was arrested.

He was brought to the local garda station and given two fines, for failing to wear a face covering and for travelling more than 5km from home for non-essential reasons.

A spokesman for Cavan/Monaghan Gardai said this afternoon: "Yesterday evening the Gardai in Bailieboro attended a local supermarket and encountered an intoxicated male attempting to purchase alcohol.

"This male was not wearing a face covering and was aggressive towards shop staff.

"He was subsequently arrested under the Public Order Act and taken to Bailieboro Garda Station.

"He was also issued two Fixed Payment Notices - for non wearing of a face covering and for travelling outside 5km for non essential purposes.

"We must remember that supermarket staff are also on the frontline during the pandemic are providing everyone with an essential service."
