Gardai renew appeal for information into brutal murder of Keith Branigan in Co Louth caravan park

Gardai have renewed their appeal for information into the brutal gangland murder of Keith Branigan.

The 29-year-old was gunned down by a two-man assassination team at a popular caravan park at Clogherhead, Co Louth, on August 27.

The killing is regarded as the first murder in the so-called Drogheda feud which erupted last July.

The trigger man, who was driven to the camp site by an accomplice, called out Mr Branigan’s first name before unleashing a hail of bullets on him.

Sources said when the recently married man, who was working on decking with a friend outside a holiday mobile home, acknowledged the greeting before the gunman opened fire.

At least five bullets hit Mr Branigan as he tried to flee.

The gunman walked back to the red Lexus car, registration 05-C-24473, after the shooting. The vehicle was later found burnt out on Thurles Road not far from Dunleer.

Mr Branigan was closely associated with the leader of one of the gangs involved in the violent feud.

They had visited the holiday campsite and spoke with the victim just a short time before the hit.

Mr Branigan had a string of convictions for violent crimes, but was not a senior figure in the gang. However, he was used as muscle and as a driver by the gang leadership.

Gardai yesterday re-issued an appeal for information, especially for anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious in the Clogherhead area on the day of the murder to contact them.

A spokesman said: “Anyone with information can contact Drogheda Garda station on 041 9874200 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111.”
