Gardai release name and image of man found dead at Cork city car park

Gardai probing the "unexplained" death of a man found in the middle of a city today have released his name and image.

The body of 35-year-old Gary Dineen was discovered in an alleyway by a car park this morning.

Officers attended a scene at Merchant's Quay car park in Cork city, on the Parnell Place side, shortly after 11.30am.

The scene was preserved and a technical examination was carried out.

A post mortem took place this afternoon at Cork University Hospital, the results of which have been given to gardai.

Gardai are now appealing for information after identifying Mr Dineen, who is originally from the north side of Cork city.

Gardai are asking the following to contact Bridewell Garda Station at 021-4943330, The Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station:

  • Anyone who was in Mr Dineen’s company from Saturday, August 8
  • Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious or unusual in Merchant Quay Car Park and its environs from Saturday August 8 to Wednesday August 12
  • Anyone that availed of the services of the Merchants Quay Shopping centre car park who may have noticed anything, particularly drivers with dash cam footage from Saturday August 8 to Wednesday August 12

It's understood officers are keeping an open mind as they investigate the death.

Tributes have been pouring in for the 35-year-old, who was well-known around the city.

Caitriona Twomey of Penny Dinners was among those with fond words, saying Gary came from a lovely family and was "so mannerly and respectful".

She said: "It's very sad, he's from a lovely family and we knew him well here.

"He was so mannerly and respectable. We're all shocked to hear."

Caitriona went on to say Gary had a passion for music and reminisced on their difference in tastes as he regularly played dance tunes he made himself.
