Gardai release information about brand new type of checkpoints and patrols starting in Dublin

Gardai have released in-depth information about a set of new checkpoints and patrols coming to the capital.

The checkpoints are being set up in the hope of clamping down on those riding scrambler bikes illegally.

There has been a massive increase in the number of these vehicles being used in the capital in recent months.

In a statement, Gardai told Dublin Live that there was a huge danger associated with the driving of scramblers in an residential environment.

They confirmed that a broader approach is being applied to tackle this issue and is focused mostly on the inner-city environment. 

Community Gardai are being tasked with identifying those engaged in the driving of the scramblers.

This includes identifying where they are driving from and where they are headed to.  

Identification of users will be filed under 'crime' or 'personal/social/sport'.

A garda spokesman said: "If they are being used for crime, breaches of the Road Traffic Act by individuals using scrambler bikes will be incorporated into the criminal investigations."

They added: "Where it is identified that the individual is using the scrambler bike in a  personal, social or sport capacity, Community Gardai will engage with them and focus on legislative requirements. 

"The risks associated with the careless driving of the scrambler bikes will be explored from a safety perspective."

Gardai introduce brand new type of checkpoints and patrols in Dublin for scramblers  

Community Gardai from the Small Area Policing framework will also work with members of the Local Community to reinforce the message of Road Safety and the use of Scrambler bikes. 

They concluded: "The Garda Confidential phone number will be circulated requesting information on the users of these scramblers. 

"Any information arising will be carefully assessed and subjects identified. 

"Finally, a proactive approach will be applied to the detection of offences for the use of scrambler bikes in the Road Traffic Acts."
