Gardai pull over vehicle for speeding and find serious law being broken as driver arrested

Gardaí stopped a vehicle for speeding before finding out the driver had drugs in their system.

The Garda Roads Policing Unit in Co. Waterford reported pulling a driver in recent days for speeding, only to find that he was in breach of a much more serious law.

After members of an Garda Síochána stopped the car, they carried out a roadside drugs test on the driver.

The test came up positive for the presence of drugs and the person was arrested with a court appearance and charges expected.

Officials posted an image of the Volkswagen car online and wrote: "Detected by Waterford Roads Policing Unit (RPU) speeding and failed roadside drugs test. Driver arrested, court appearance to follow. "

According to Irish law, if you are convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you will be automatically fined and disqualified from driving for a set period of time.

Repeated or serious breaches may result in you being sentenced to prison.

In 2021 alone, Gardaí have carried out 27,882 breath tests and have detained 13,211 for various offences after pulling drivers.

Police and the Road Safety Authority have been encouraging drivers to slow as the 2021 death toll has reached 109 already.

Assistant Commissioner, Paula Hilman, Roads Policing and Community Engagement, recently said: "I would appeal to road users to slow down, drive at the right speed for the conditions, and watch out for vulnerable road users.

“Don’t drive when impaired through drink, drugs or fatigue and always wear a seatbelt and ensure passengers are wearing theirs too, no matter how short the trip."
