Gardai pull driver over for their poor driving to find serious offence

Gardai pulled a motorist over for erratic driving at the weekend and found them to be four times over the legal blood alcohol limit.

After stopping the vehicle, gardai carried out a breathalyser test on the driver and found them to be way over the limit.

Gardai confirmed: “Clane Gardaí were on patrol when they saw this motorist driving erratically.

“They were stopped and were found to be 4 times over the legal alcohol limit.

“They were arrested. Proceedings to follow.”

According to Irish law, if you are convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you will be automatically fined and disqualified from driving for a set period of time.

Repeated or serious breaches may result in you being sentenced to prison.

In 2021 alone, gardai have carried out 27,882 breath tests and have detained 13,211 for various offences after pulling drivers.

Gardai and the Road Safety Authority have been encouraging drivers to slow as the 2021 death toll has reached 106 already.

Assistant Commissioner, Paula Hilman, Roads Policing and Community Engagement, said; "I would appeal to road users to slow down, drive at the right speed for the conditions, and watch out for vulnerable road users.

“Don’t drive when impaired through drink, drugs or fatigue and always wear a seatbelt and ensure passengers are wearing theirs too, no matter how short the trip.

“This advice is all the more important given the fact that Met Eireann has issued weather warnings for heavy rainfall and possible localised flooding for today and this weekend.”
