Gardai manning inner city flat complex as attacks and intimidation hit 'breaking point'

Gardai have set up camp in an inner-city flat complex as tensions rise over anti-social behaviour as well as a separate drugs issue.

Thugs attacking and intimidating residents, as well as one report of a pair having sex on the stairwell, has led to a huge influx of gardai into Pearse House.

The issues have hit breaking point for some locals who have reported other issues including children as young as eight being used as drug runners by local dealers.

The kids are being used all across the inner city with gardai monitoring a number of areas.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Christchurch and Meath Street areas have also seen kids being exploited.

Gardai have told Pearse House residents they are there to deter a teen gang - though some adults have been arrested on public order offences and a number of searches have taken place.

The teen gang, who are from different areas between Ringsend and Cork St, have been gathering in the complex's main square over the last month.

One resident even reported how a pair had been having sex on their stairwell right outside their home.

Another said: "It had gotten out of hand, they were coming in and shouting and abusing us as we were going in and out of our homes. I'm glad gardai are coming around now but a lot of the kids don't care, they're throwing eggs at them."

Other locals have reported issues with the garda presence as they claim the heavy approach has led to more tensions.

Some said they felt they're being treated with suspicion walking outside their homes with one man reporting being chased while walking with his 1-year-old while another was arrested on public order offences.

Gardai have told locals they will be manning the flats for the coming months.

Community officers have been engaging with younger kids while public order members have been walking the area.

Residents have been told to expect the gardai to remain for the coming months.

Local councillor Chris Andrews says the majority of people are "delighted" they are staying as issues in the complex "hit breaking point."

He told Dublin Live: "Most people are delighted the guards are there. They're reluctant to say it in public, but they're happy.

"People should not be held hostage in their own homes. The gardai being there is long overdue.

"It's a very good and strong community traditionally, and they want it back that way.

"The community guards are really active, they're very welcome there as they send out a clear message.

"The people around there have a lot of challenges facing them and just want to get on with it without this kind of behaviour from their own neighbours.

"It's a small number ruining it for everyone."
