Gardai make surprising discovery after stopping driver at speeding checkpoint

Gardai manning a speeding checkpoint got more than they bargained for when they stopped a motorist over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Members of the force were operating the checkpoint in Buncrana in Co Donegal yesterday evening when one driver came to their attention.

They spotted the individual throwing rubbish out their window and subsequently stopped the vehicle.

However, when they questioned the driver, it turned out they had been evading a bench warrant for more than seven years.

The warrant was for road traffic offences, and the motorist was duly arrested.

Not only with they face a court date, but they will also receive a fine for littering.

The bizarre story was revealed by Donegal gardai on Facebook today.

They said: "Yesterday evening while operating a speed checkpoint, Buncrana Roads Policing Unit observed a motorist littering out the window of a vehicle.

"The vehicle was stopped and the driver was subsequently arrested on foot of a bench warrant that had been issued over 7 years ago in relation to road traffic offences.

"Court will now follow and the driver will also receive a litter fine."

It comes as Gardai across the country were busy over the Bank Holiday weekend carrying out checkpoints which saw multiple drivers arrested for drink driving.

Roads policing units in Dublin carried out 16 big checkpoints, testing 400 motorists.

Nine drivers were arrested for failed tests and now face disqualification and heavy fines.

Officers carried out a high-visibility road policing enforcement operation over the August weekend, targeting lifesaver offences, including speed, seatbelts and drug driving.

An Garda Siochana posted on Twitter: "Roads Policing Units in Dublin carried out 16 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints over the holiday weekend, testing 400 motorists for alcohol and drugs.

"9 drivers were arrested for failed tests and now face disqualification and heavy fines."
