Gardai make multiple arrests as they clamp down on public gatherings in Cork, Dublin, Galway and more

Gardai made a number of arrests in Cork City on Saturday night as they clamped down on gatherings countrywide.

Sharing images on their social media, Gardai showed how they were patrolling the streets of Ireland's cities to deter public gatherings.

It comes after scenes of public drinking in Cork and Dublin last Saturday which was later discussed in the Dail and almost saw takeaway pints banned.

Officers took part in foot patrols of Cork, Dublin, Galway and other cities with some offences throughout the evening.

Large crowds had gathered in Cork and Grand Parade in particular with officers forced to make a number of arrests.

A garda spokesperson said: "As part of our increased patrols, particularly in relation to large groups gathering in open spaces, we have made a number arrests for public order offences in Cork city centre tonight(Saturday)."

Regarding Galway, the spokesperson added: "Gardai were out on foot patrol in Galway City Saturday night ensuring compliance with the public health advice.

"In particular An Garda Siochana is focusing on those gathering in groups to drink in open spaces."

Similar operations were taking place right across the country.
