Gardai led on 'dangerous' 180km/h chase of 'drug-fuelled' driver as stinger used to end pursuit

Gardai were led on a "dangerous" 180 km/h car chase by an allegedly "drug-fuelled" driver on Monday night.

Officers in an unmarked patrol car spotted the vehicle travelling at 170km/h on the N3 in Co Cavan and set off in pursuit.

The car then failed to stop for gardai, and performed "dangerous overtakes" at speeds of up to 180km/h.

Local gardai worked together to stop the vehicle, with a stinger used to help slow down the car.

Officers revealed that the driver was disqualified and that they also tested positive for cocaine.

The driver has now been charged, with the car taken off the road.

A Cavan and Monaghan Garda Division spokesman said: "Last night a car passed an unmarked patrol car attached to Virginia travelling at 170kmph on the N3 and failed to stop when signalled to do so.

"This car performed a number of dangerous overtakes travelling at speeds of up to 180kmph.

"With the assistance of Bailieboro Gardai and Cavan Roads Policing Unit the stinger was deployed and the vehicle stopped.

"It transpired the driver was disqualified from driving and tested positive for cocaine.

"He was charged to Court and the car was taken off the road. Fixed Payment Notices will also issue to both driver and passenger for non essential journeys.

"Today another motorist was stopped in Loch Gowna at an Operation Fanacht checkpoint.

"The driver had no insurance, NCT or tax and tested positive for cannabis. He also is facing prosecution."
