Gardaí launch probe as shots are fired at a house in Galway

Gardaí have launched a probe after shots were fired at a house in Galway on Thursday evening.

The terrifying incident occurred in the Knocknacarra area of the city.

Officers raced to the scene at around 7:40 pm and said the damage had been done to the property but stated nobody was injured in the gun attack.

Fianna Fail Cllr Peter Keane said he was shocked and surprised at where the shooting happened.

Speaking to The Irish Mirror yesterday, he said: “Knocknacarra is never problematic.

“It is a surprise to me that it’s happened but given the prevalence of antisocial behaviour and violence it shouldn’t be a surprise that it has crept into our area as well.

“It is a huge surprise. It’s not something I would condone and I hope the gardai catch the culprits as quickly as possible.”

A Garda spokesman said they “are investigating the discharge of a firearm at a house Knocknacarra, Co. Galway that occurred on Thursday, 16th of March 2023.

“The incident occurred at approximately 7:40 pm. Damage was caused to the property and no persons were injured. Investigations are ongoing.”

They added that they were appealing for witnesses to come forward after two men were arrested. They said the shots were fired at the front door and a window.

Those involved fled the scene in a dark-coloured saloon car.

Two men remained in custody last night/tonight in relation to the incident.

One is in their late 20s and another is in their early 30s.

Both are currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda Station in the Western Region.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Salthill Garda Station on 091-514720, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
