Gardai launch murder investigation after man found in burnt out car in Lucan, Dublin

It is understood that Gardai have launched a murder investigation after the body of a man was found in a burnt out car in Lucan on Monday night.

The body was found in the passenger seat of the vehicle after Emergency services rushed to the scene at Mount Andrew Rise.

It is believed that the man may have been shot in the head before being found at around 8:30pm.

After an overnight forensic examination, Gardai are now treating the incident as a murder case RTE reports.

It is believed that the man may have got into the hatchback car with a person or people he trusted and may have been drove to the scene.

He is also suspected to have received a head wound.

The area still remains sealed off this morning as Gardai continue to try to identify the person and the details of the car.

The Garda Technical Bureau and State Pathologist are due to arrive at the scene later today.

A Garda spokeswoman said: "Gardai are attending the scene of a fatal incident in the Mount Andrew area, Lucan this evening Monday, 18th November 2019.

"Emergency services attended the scene of a car fire earlier this evening.

"A body was subsequently discovered in the car. The scene has been sealed off for examination. No further information is available at this time."

Local councillor Anne-Marie McNally said the community is shocked at the news which comes just months after a man was shot multiple times in nearby Griffeen Glen Park

The Social Democrat told Dublin Live: "People are shocked and terrified. It's a very quiet estate, and everyone's very shaken.

"It's still early in the investigation so we don't really know or completely understand what's going on.

"Mount Andrew is your typical quiet estate, full of nice families. The area is a popular cut-through route from the bus stop off the N4. A lot of people would go through it.

"There's been some extremely horrible incidents in Lucan lately, and it's come up when speaking to people while canvassing."

Councillor Shane Moynihan also spoke of his horror describing violent crime as "unacceptable".

He said: "Horrified to hear of a violent shooting in Mount Andrew tonight. This estate is home to many young families. Particularly violent crime like this is unacceptable, and we will not tolerate it in our community. Thinking of the victim and all those affected."
