Gardai joined by officials in unusual 'multi-agency' checkpoint in Co Donegal as vehicles targeted

Gardai were joined by officials from the Road Safety Authority in an unusual checkpoint in Co Donegal.

The "multi-agency" operation took place in the Lisfannon and Burt areas of the county on Wednesday.

Officers said that the aim of the checkpoint was to ensure that heavy goods vehicles were "complying with regulations".

HGVs were particularly targeted but other vehicles were stopped during the operation.

However gardai said that no arrests were made and that all vehicles were found to be "in order".

A Donegal garda spokesman said on Thursday: "A Multi agency checkpoint was performed yesterday evening, September 22nd by Buncrana Roads Policing Unit and Road Safety Authority Ireland.

"The checkpoints were conducted in the Lisfannon and Burt areas to ensure that heavy goods vehicles were complying with regulations.

"A number of HGV's and other vehicles were stopped and all were found to be in order. "

It comes as units have been deployed across the country in recent weeks as part of an expected increase in road traffic which will accompany the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.

And it has been a busy few weeks for officers at checkpoints, with a number of fines handed out for public intoxication and a limo driver being caught out for illegally parking.

Last week officers in Tipperary managed to nab two drivers at a checkpoint after they both flew by.

A spokesperson said: "Cahir Roads Policing Unit conducting a speed checkpoint on the M8 earlier this week detected two vehicles travelling at 190km & 189km at the same time.

"Both drivers arrested for dangerous driving & court proceedings to follow. Please slow down."

Then, on Friday evening, a unit in Kildare on bike duty caught a number of offenders.

A spokesperson added: "Gardai on mountain bike patrol in Naas on Friday night engaging with members of the public..

"Unfortunately they had to issue €75 on the spot fines to 3 males for drinking in public at Popular Square under the Control of Consumption & Possession of Alcohol in Public Places Bye-Laws 2020.

"A limo car was also found to be parked across 2 disabled parking bays. The driver was issued with €150 Fixed Charge Notice."
