Gardai issue warning to motorists and road users as road deaths in Ireland rise

Six more people died on Irish roads this year compared to the same date in 2018.

Gardai have issued a warning to road users as 93 people have died in collisions as of Wednesday, August 14.

New figures show that 52 drivers, 10 passengers, 15 pedestrians, 10 motorcyclists and six pedal cyclists have been killed this year.

Gardai also revealed the number of drivers caught speeding, drink driving, on mobile phones and not having their seat belts fastened has risen.

Roads Policing Unit Cork North Inspector Joe O'Connor highlighted the increase in detections at a checkpoint near Mallow, Co Cork on Thursday morning.

He said three of six deaths in the area in the last month were motorcyclists.

A total of 10 motorcyclists died so far this year, compared to seven in the same period last year.

Superintendent Edmund Golden of the National Roads Policing Bureau appealed to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists to be more visible at all times on the road.

A statement said: "Motorists should be more vigilant during this high-risk period, particularly in respect of motorcyclists.

"Drivers need to look and look again particularly in their blind spot when turning, overtaking and at junctions."
