Gardai issue warning over phone call scam as fraudsters 'impersonate officers'

Gardai have warned people of fraudsters impersonating them to gain access to personal data.

The latest fraud warning comes after the pandemic saw a huge increase in scam calls, texts and emails.

The reports suggest that criminals are using software to disguise their phone numbers to make them look like they have come from genuine garda stations.

In a statement, a garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí have received reports of persons receiving phone calls from fraudsters claiming to be members of An Garda Síochána.

“The number calling appears to be the phone number of a genuine Garda station.”

Gardai have reminded people that they will never make contact with members of the public in this way.

What to look out for

The person receiving the call will hear a pre-recorded or automated message prompting them to select an option by pressing a number on their keypad.

The person is then put through to another person alleging to be a member of An Garda Siochana.

The scammer then either looks for personal information or will inform the person that their details have been involved or are linked to a crime.

After giving over personal details, the victim of the scam receives a follow-up call from another fraudster asking them to provide further personal information on behalf of the gardai.

The scam is designed to provoke fear in the victim and encourage them to act quickly without thinking.

Gardai have advised people to take the following precautions if they are suspicious of a call:

• Do not engage with the caller.

• Do not return the call.

• Do not follow the automated instructions – Do not press 1 etc.

• Never transfer money.

• Never disclose personal or financial information.

• Hang up and end the call.

Some people have reported scammers telling them that a warrant has been issued for their arrest.

One Facebook user said: “I had one telling me there was a warrant out for my arrest for money laundering and drug trafficking.”

Another said: “I got a call claiming to be from the dsp saying my pps number has been compromised then to press1 to speak to an agent before legal action was been taken I just hung up and blocked the number.”
