Gardai issue warning after three men pretending to be members of the force visit home to 'inspect money'

Gardai are urging the public to be vigilant after a "theft attempt" by three men pretending to be members of the force.

The men recently called to a home in the Threecastles area of Co Kilkenny wishing to inspect money.

People are being warned that gardai would never do this, and officers will always carry ID with them that the public can verify.

Those who are dubious about a caller should "be suspicious" and "be aware" when approached by strangers.

A post on the Garda Síochána Waterford/Kilkenny/Carlow Facebook page said: "Checking your money, NOT US!!

"Gardaí in Kilkenny have become aware of males impersonating Members of An Garda Síochána recently who called to a house in the Threecastles area wishing to inspect money.

"This is not what we do and was undoubtedly a theft attempt. Our plain clothes members will always carry a valid ID card and you can verify this by contacting the local station or indeed any Garda Station.

"Our uniform members tend to drive marked vehicles easily identifiable.

"WE DO NOT CALL TO HOUSES TO INSPECT PEOPLE'S MONEY.

"Be aware, be suspicious, don't be shy to call."
