Gardai issue warning about latest AIB scam as they urge Irish public to 'be wary'

Gardai are urging the public to be vigilant about the latest AIB scam doing the rounds in Ireland.

Fraudsters continue to target people with scam text messages purporting to be from financial institutions or delivery companies.

Their aim is to trick people into clicking links and providing details that will help them take money or personal information.

The latest scam warns recipients that access to their AIB online account has been "revoked" and encourages people to click on a link.

People who receive this message are urged not to click on the link and to be "wary" of such texts.

Gardai for the Western region issued the warning and listed several key pieces of advice that the public should follow.

Posting an image of the fraudulent message, they said: "This is a screenshot of a scam text message that was received this week.

"The recipient does not have an AIB account. Should you receive a similar type of text message (Link contained) from any financial institution, regardless of whether you bank with them or not, you should NOT click the link.

"GNECB (Garda National Economic Crime Bureau) have issued the following advice:

  • "Be wary of such texts (even if the message thread includes previous genuine texts from your bank).
  • "NEVER EVER click on links – by doing so you are accessing cloned websites.
  • "NEVER EVER give away personal data like PINs, one time codes or passwords.
  • "If you have been a victim of this fraud, it is vital you change your password and PIN code immediately.
  • "If you have been a victim of this fraud, report the matter to your bank asking them to recall any transactions which may have taken place, and report the matter to An Garda Síochána.
  • "AIB bank will never send a text containing a link."
