Luckily, the first car the vehicle met was the garda patrol car, which meant the risk of colliding with another road user on the motorway was avoided.
It emerged that the driver had become "confused" while following their satellite navigation system and subsequently went the wrong way.
Gardai have since issued a warning to people using these guidance tools, while the motorist in question faces proceedings.
A spokesperson from the Tipperary division said on Sunday: "This evening this vehicle entered the M8 motorway the wrong way.
"Thankfully the first vehicle they met were Cahir Gardai on patrol who intercepted the vehicle quickly. The motorist stated they were confused while using Satnav.
"While Satnavs are a useful guidance tool, We are urging motorists to watch the road and be situationally aware of junctions and road layouts on approach.
"Thankfully this incident was stopped before anyone could have been seriously hurt. Proceedings commenced."
