Gardai issue update on retail outlets 'breaking' new restrictions as warning issued

Six retail outlets have been found in "suspected breaches" of new regulations in the past few days.

As Ireland enters week two of its second lockdown, gardai are trying to ensure compliance by conducting inspections of retail premises' and carrying out checkpoints on major and secondary roads.

Retailers that are allowed to remain open may now only sell what are deemed as "essential goods".

When it comes to shops, gardai have said that the vast majority are complying, or came into compliance after being flagged by officers.

A staggering 954 inspections were carried out between 12pm on Sunday and 3pm on Monday.

Gardai are carrying out follow-up checks on these locations.

But officers said as of Thursday, there were six incidents were outlets have continued with suspected breaches.

And Deputy Commissioner of Policing and Security, John Twomey, warned that gardai will focus on non-compliant retailers in the coming days.

In these cases, a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Meanwhile, gardai also carried out checkpoints on 132 main roads and around 1,000 secondary roads each day as part of Operation Fanacht.

They say that almost everyone has complied with Level Five restrictions, recording just two cases where individuals were suspected of breaching travel restrictions since October 22.

In total, there have been 71 crimes recorded in the course of the operations that were not related to breaches of regulations. These were mainly road traffic and drug related.

Speaking today, Deputy Commissioner, Policing and Security, John Twomey said, "Compliance by the public and businesses with the Level 5 public health regulations has been very high and we thank them for that.

"It is clear from traffic volumes that people are heeding the advice to think before making a journey about whether it is really essential.

"We are continuing to visit and engage with retail premises to ensure compliance with the regulations.

"We are seeing wide-spread compliance, but there are some premises who are potentially in breach of the regulations and need to pay attention to the obligations upon them."

He added: "An Garda Síochána will focus this weekend on those retailers who are still potentially not compliant.

"Gardaí throughout the country continue to support people who are vulnerable or who feel isolated.

"If you know of anyone who, for instance, needs their pension collected, or some shopping done, or checked on please contact your local Garda station. We are here to help.

"We appreciate this is a difficult time for people, but we all need to continue to work together to reduce the spread of COVID-19 by adhering to the public health advice.”
