Gardai issue over 100 Fixed Payment Notices and turn back 270 vehicles in breach of Covid rules

Gardaí have reported that officers in the Wicklow Division issued over 70 Fixed Payment Notices and turned back over 200 vehicles today after issuing a caution to the drivers.

In a post on social media, An Garda Síochána said: "The Covid-19 Pandemic remains a public health crisis. An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all citizens to comply with Public Health Guidelines and Regulations, in particular essential journeys, in order to continue to save lives."

Similar cautions were issued by the Roscommon / Longford Roads Policing Unit during their recent operation at Newcastle Woods, Ballymahon this afternoon in support of the public health measures.

Approximately 70 vehicles were turned around and more than 30 Fixed Payment Notices were issued to parked vehicles that were found in excess of their 5km.

An Garda Síochána state: "Under the current regulations only essential journeys are permitted and exercise can only be taken up to 5km from your residence."

Elsewhere, the Louth Roads Policing Unit detected a motorist that was travelling at 184km/hr on the M1 at Ardee last night.

A Fixed Charge Notice was issued to issue the driver and the motorist also received a Fixed Payment Notice because this journey was deemed to be non-essential.

The Gardai noted that the driver was almost 100km from home when stopped. The driver was later arrested for dangerous driving.
