Gardai issue important reminder to Leaving Cert students left disappointed on results day

Over 61,000 students received their Leaving Certificate results on Friday as the results reached a record high.

A sharp increase in the number of students receiving top grades will now lead to a jump in the required CAO points for most college courses.

This year's Leaving Certificate allowed students to choose written exams, accredited grades based on their teacher's estimates or a combination of both.

Allowing students to choose which combination best suited them led to an overall increase in the marks awarded.

However, as always, not all students will be happy with their results.

Gardai have issued a statement reminding students their results “do not define” them and to seek support if they are feeling down about their grades.

A garda spokesperson said, “We wish all Leaving Certificate students the best of luck as they are due to receive their results today.

“Students, please remember that your results do not define you as a person nor will they define your future.

“There are those of you who will get the results that you have been hoping for and there are those who will not and who will feel disappointed as a result.

“Please be very mindful of this and be kind to your fellow students and friends.

“The schools will offer support to you and your Parents/Guardians but there are also a number of other places where advice and support may be sought.

“We wish you all every happiness and success in whichever path you choose to take.”
