Gardai issue Halloween fireworks warning as €10,000 fine or prison sentence on the cards

Gardai have issued a warning ahead of Halloween celebrations in the hopes of making people aware of the dangers of bonfires, fireworks and being out late at night.

People are reminded that it is against the law to:

  • Possess or have a firework
  • Sell or supply (or give) a firework without a license
  • Light fireworks
  • Throw an ignited firework at any person or property

Anyone found to be in breach of these laws will face a fine of up to €10,000 or five years' imprisonment - or both.

On Halloween night 2019, the fire brigade and ambulance services responded to over 1,000 callouts nationwide.

Fire Fighter Sub Officer Darren O Connor showcases the dangers of explosives to fingers and hands, the dangers of using water on an oil based fire which leads to a considerable fire ball and the dangers of attending illegal bonfires during the launch of Dublin Fire Brigade Halloween Fire Safety Campaign at Dublin Fire Brigade HQ, Dublin (Collins Photo Agency)

These were due to people building bonfires too close to houses, parked cars and electrical wires, which increases the likelihood of fires and people being burned or injured from lit fireworks.

More than €1 million was spent by local authorities cleaning up Halloween bonfires and fireworks last year.

A garda spokesperson said: “With Halloween almost upon us again, please get rid of any materials which can be used as stockpile for bonfires.

“Try to ensure that nothing is left outside your premises, particularly pallets and tyres, as these are the main items sought

“Although it can be a fun time of year for many, it can be the stuff of nightmares for others because of anti-social behaviour.

“Think about older persons, pets and families when engaging in anti-social behaviour.

“Chances are you have people at home fitting that profile, how does it affect them? If you are a parent, know where your kids are.

“Many people sustain horrible burn injuries at this time of year also. Let’s all try to have a safe but enjoyable Halloween.

"If you have any information regarding persons engaging in anti-social behaviour, selling fireworks or stockpiling materials for bonfires, contact your local Garda Station.”

Gardai have also issued tips to stay safe during Halloween. These include:

1. Stay a safe distance from bonfires and fireworks.

2. Have an adult with you when ‘trick or treating” or at events.

3. If you dress up in dark clothes, add reflective material so that motorists and cyclists can see you.

4. Make sure costumes are fire-resistant.

5. Do not buy, use, ignite or supply fireworks.

6. Keep pets indoors on Halloween night.

7. Check on your elderly neighbours who may be frightened.
