Gardai issue coronavirus scam warning as fraudsters try to take advantage of COVID-19 pandemic

A warning over potential scams carried out by fraudsters taking advantage of the coronavirus pandemic has been issued by gardai.

Gardai are warning the public that scammers may try to carry out scams such as phising, social engineering scams and fraudulent selling and trading.

The scams could be carried out either in person or online.

They have also issued an advice booklet for identifying and dealing with potential scams.

A spokesman said: "An Garda Siochana would like to make the public aware of the possibility for fraudsters exploiting the spread of Covid-19 Coronavirus to carry out scams either online or in person. The main types of scams include Phishing, Social Engineering Scams and Fraudulent Selling/Trading."

The advice comes as the first death from COVID-19 in Ireland has been confirmed.

The booklet reads:

Fraudsters may exploit the spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus to carry out various types of fraud.

The three types of fraud to look out for are:

1. Phising / Smishing / Vishing

2. Fraudulent Selling / Trading

3. Social Engineering Scams

If you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime contact your local Garda Station.
