Gardai issue Christmas 2021 rule of the road warning after sharing horror pictures from crash

Gardai are warning motorists ahead of the increasingly busy period on Irish roads over the festive season.

It comes after members of the force were called to the scene of a crash on Friday evening in Mullagh, Co Cavan.

The two-vehicle collision involved a van and a car, with both drivers having a lucky escape and avoiding serious injuries.

One of the road users was caught drink driving and gardai shared images of the collision online in a bid to warn motorists about the dangers of drinking and driving.

They added that what made "matters worse" was the fact that the same person had been disqualified from driving for eight years.

The individual also had no insurance, no tax and no valid NCT.

He was sent to Bailieboro Garda Station while further enquiries were carried out.

Gardai for the Monaghan/Cavan Division said on Saturday: "In the run up to Christmas, Mullagh Gardai yesterday evening dealt with this timely reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving.

"Luckily nobody was seriously injured. To make matters worse, the drunk driver was currently disqualified for 8 years, was uninsured, had no tax and no valid NCT.

"He was conveyed to Bailieboro Garda Station and processed, analysis of the sample is awaited."
