Gardai issue Bank of Ireland scam warning after fraudsters take 'large sum' from person's account

The Irish public is being reminded to be vigilant as scam attempts continue to be widespread across the country.

Gardai are warning that fraudsters "haven't gone away" as innocent people are still be targeted for their money or personal information.

One popular scam attempt is smishing whereby people will receive text messages from entities purporting to be legitimate banks or companies.

Recipients are encouraged to click on a link in the text message and are then prompted to provide their personal details which criminals use to take their cash or information.

Gardai gave the example of one victim who received a message from scammers pretending to be from Bank of Ireland and who ended up losing a significant amount of money.

Members of the force from the Cavan/Monaghan division said: "2022 is here and the fraudsters haven't gone away. We are still receiving reports from victims of smishing.

"One victim received a text purporting to be from the Bank of Ireland. The usual panic technique was used stating that another device had tried to access the bank account and to click the link to secure it.

"The victim was then redirected to what was believed to be the genuine BOI website and bank details were then completed.

"Three withdrawal transactions were then made by the fraudster for a large sum.

"Please remember BOI will never send a text containing a link. If you receive such a text or similar never click on the link and delete it immediately.

"We acknowledge that so many people are fraud aware but we still need to spread the word to those who aren't."
