Gardai issue Bank Holiday warning as house party fines continue to rise

With lockdown restrictions lifting and inter-county travel set to resume on May 10, Ireland is continuing on its path to an outdoor summer with businesses reopening.

However, ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend, the Gardai have called on the public to continue to act responsibly and adhere to the public health rules that are still present.

In a statement, Gardai said that they're continuing to find groups that are gathering at house parties, social gatherings, exercise etc.

At present, over 3,900 fines have been issued to people attending or organising house parties and gatherings.

In terms of an overall figure, approximately 20,974 Covid-19 fines have been issued by the Gardai for various Covid-19 breaches.

Ahead of the long weekend, Gardaí have said that they'll have "high visibility patrols at public amenities, parks and beauty spots across the country this weekend."

A police presence will also be widespread on Ireland's roads with Gardai checkpoints and high visibility patrols across the country this weekend in support of public health regulations.

Once again, Gardai are advising the public of the need to plan their activities over the weekend, while warning that any driver that's found to be in breach of the non-essential travel regulations will be fined. This also applies to any adult passenger that's in the vehicle.

When visiting amenities within the 20km travel limit, motorists are being based to please park legally.

Speaking today, Deputy Commissioner, Policing and Security, Anne Marie McMahon has a message of caution for the public.

"Thanks to the sacrifice of so many people, there is a lot to be positive about. However, COVID-19 is still here. People are still dying from COVID-19 and getting seriously ill.

"So, when you are enjoying the outdoors this weekend please maintain the good practices that have got us to this position. Please do not gather in large groups. Please maintain social distancing. Please do not hold or attend house parties. Please remember to wash your hands regularly," she said.

In terms of the Covid-related fines that have been issued by the Gardai, here's a breakdown of offences and amounts.
