Gardai issue appeal as man seriously injured after shooting in Ballyvolane, Co Cork

Gardai are appealing for witnesses following a shooting in Cork on Friday night.

One man, 41, was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after the incident in Ballyvolane on the city's northside.

He was treated at the scene shortly before 8pm before being rushed to Cork University Hospital.

Gardai say the victim was shot at a number of times but his condition is described as stable.

It's believed a lone gunman approached the victim before firing shots and fleeing on foot.

A spokesman said: "Gardaí at Watercourse Road are appealing to anyone who was in Chapelgate area between 7pm and 7.45pm to come forward.

"The injured man was initially treated at the scene by members of the Southern Region Garda ASU (Armed Support Unit) before he was taken by Ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

"The scene is currently preserved for examination by local scenes of crime officers.

"An incident room has been established at Watercourse Road Station where a case conference was held by investigators this morning. No arrests have been made to date and enquires are ongoing.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Mayfield Garda Station 021-4558510 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111."
