Gardai issue alert over 'potentially life-threatening' fireworks being sold in Ireland

Gardai have issued a Halloween warning to the public after being made aware of ‘potentially life-threatening fireworks’ on sale in Ireland.

Concerns have been raised around fireworks being brought into the country through Europe, Northern Ireland, and England that are so powerful they could cause fatalities.

In one case, a Chinese-made firework that has made its way into Ireland has been described as "a mini-howitzer."

Another, called a 'Black Skorpion', looks like a small missile and launches a ball of flames several hundred feet into the sky.

Police have warned that over the last ten years, members of the public have suffered third-degree burns, have lost fingers and parts of limbs - all from accidents associated with illegal fireworks.

They are now stressing that all illegal fireworks found will be immediately seized amid fears that bystanders could endure life-changing injuries.

Due to the sheer danger of some illegal fireworks, anyone caught supplying them could face prosecution and hefty fines.

In 2019 alone, the fire brigade and ambulance services responded to over 1,000 callouts nationwide on Halloween night for incidents associated with bonfires and fireworks.

An average of 20 people each year attend hospitals across Ireland for firework-related injuries - some of which are so severe they require amputation of fingers and parts of the hand.

A garda spokesperson said: “Many people sustain horrible burn injuries at this time of year also. Let’s all try to have a safe but enjoyable Halloween.

"These fireworks are illegal, they are a danger to public health and they can result in the most catastrophic health consequences.

"If you have any information regarding persons engaging in anti-social behaviour, selling fireworks, or stockpiling materials for bonfires, contact your local Garda Station.”
