Gardai investigating latest suspected arson attack at National Children's Hospital site

Gardai are investigating another suspected arson attack at the site of the National Children's Hospital.

There have been multiple fires set at the St James's Hospital site in recent weeks with a sign recently going up offering a €10,000 reward to anyone with any information as to who is behind the attacks.

The latest blaze happened on Monday and is believed to have been the 20th set at the site.

A garda spokeswoman told Dublin Live they are investigating the latest attack.

She said: "Gardaí in Kilmainham are investigating an incident that occurred at a construction site on James Street, Dublin 8 on Monday morning, 12th July, 2021. Investigations are ongoing at this time."

Gardai confirmed earlier this month that they are investigating a number of similar incidents at the construction site where up to 1,500 people are working on one of the State's largest ever building projects.

The cost of the project continues to spiral and is now at least €1.7bn, although the Government has said it still does not have a definitive figure.

More than 600 windows have already been installed, and the concrete frame was completed in March and work on internal rooms starts next month.

The fitting out of 380 single rooms, 42 critical-care beds, a 93-bed day unit, and 18 operating theatres could take nine months during 2024.

About 2,500 staff from Tallaght, Temple St, and Crumlin hospitals will work at the new facility.

The hospital had been due to open next year but this has been pushed back to 2024.
