Gardai investigating incident which saw car go on fire on Dublin's M50

Gardai are investigating an incident that saw a car go on fire on the M50.

The dangerous occurrence led to huge tailbacks with motorists advised to avoid area.

Gardai and emergency services attended the scene of a vehicle on fire on the M50 shortly after 1:40pm in the hard shoulder on the northbound carriageway near J7 Palmerstown.

The scene has since been cleared and the M50 has now fully reopened to traffic.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

Dublin Fire Brigade responded to the vehicle fire on J9 Red Cow - J7 Lucan Northbound.

They extinguished the vehicle fire, however two lanes remained closed as they awaited recovery.

Those using the Northbound between J9 Red Cow and J7 Lucan blocking the hard shoulder were warned that smoke may affect visibility so caution was advised in the area.

A spokesperson from DFB said: “Dublin Fire Brigade were called at 13:50 hrs to a vehicle fire near J7 Lucan on the M50 motorway.

“The incident was located on the Northbound carriageway and the fire had spread to nearby vegetation.

“Three units from Tallaght and Dolphins Barn fire stations attended the scene and the incident was handed over to Gardai at 1500 hrs.

“No injuries were reported.”
