Gardai investigating after alleged Islamophobic attack on teenage girl, 14, in Dundrum

Gardai are investigating an alleged Islamophobic assault on a teenage girl in South Dublin on Sunday.

A horrifying video has emerged showing a gang appearing to hit the girl, 14, as she and a friend were walking through Dundrum Village.

It's alleged that the girl was hit and pelted with eggs while a hijab she was wearing was ripped from her head.

The video has been shared and condemned widely online while gardai have confirmed they are investigating an incident.

A spokesman told Dublin Live: "Gardai are investigating an alleged minor assault of a female in her teens, which occurred on Sunday 18th August 2019 at approximately 15:30 on Main St, Dundrum.

"No arrests have been made and investigation is ongoing."

The video shows a large group on the village's main street before the camera faces the sky and lots of screaming can be heard.

Egg shells can be seen around the ground as the gang then leave and the teen picks herself back up.

Local Fine Gael Councillor Jim O'Leary blasted the attack and urged anyone with information t contact gardai.

He told Dublin Live: "It's dreadful. Whatever your views about any issue this is assault, and it's assault on a minor just going about her business.

"I urge anyone with information to come forward. We need to nip this in the bud right now."

Culture and heritage minister Jospha Madigan has also commented on the incident saying she hopes those responsible see justice "quickly".

She said: "I condemn in the strongest possible terms the assault on a Muslim girl who had her hijab taken from her in Dundrum village yesterday. I hope the perpetrators are brought to justice quickly."
