A man in Limerick has claimed that he had ten of his fingers “chopped off” in a “truly savage” assault over the weekend.
Gardai have confirmed that they are investigating an alleged knife attack on a man that took place in the Assumpta Park area of Limerick city between 4pm and 6pm last Saturday evening.
The man, who is understood to be aged in his late 20s, allegedly sustained serious injuries to his hands and face.
A shocking video that is circulating online shows an unidentified man speaking about the alleged attack, saying he is “broke up” about it.
He then holds up his bandaged hands to the camera claiming that he had “ten fingers chopped off”.
He also describes his other injuries in the clip, saying he has “staples” on the side of his head, two black eyes and he “busted [his] head off the ground as well”.
Gardai revealed that he was treated for his injuries at University Hospital Limerick.
Officers also said they recovered a knife from the scene that may have been used to inflict injuries to the man’s hands.
In a statement gardai confirmed that an investigation was underway: “Gardaí at Mayorstone are investigating the alleged assault of a man in his late 20s in the course [of] an incident at Assumpta Park, Limerick on Saturday the 18th December, 2021.
“It’s understood the man sustained lacerations to his hand in the course of the incident that occurred sometime between 4pm and 6pm. He received treatment for his injuries at UHL.
“A knife was recovered by Gardaí from the scene.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances of the incident.”
