Gardai investigate and search launched after mystery 'flashing lights' seen in Irish mountains

Gardai are investigating after mystery "flashing lights" were seen in Irish mountains last night.

The incident happened in the Derryveagh Mountains in Co Donegal at around 5.20pm on Tuesday.

The Donegal Mountain Rescue Team were called in after a passer-by spotted the unusual sight in the area.

Fearing that someone could be in trouble, a search operation was launched.

However the DMRT said that after a four-hour search, nothing was found.

They confirmed that local gardai will continue to investigate the incident.

The DMRT wrote on Facebook: "Team were tasked this evening at 17:23hrs by An Garda Síochána.

"A member of public become concerned that somebody may be in trouble after seeing flashing lights in the Derryveagh mountains.

"DMRT members searched the area where the light was seen and found nothing of interest. Team was stood down at 21:45hrs, with An Garda to investigate further."

They added: "The team is comprised completely of volunteers, who are call 24/7. We will remain on call over the festive period."
