Gardai in warning to brides and grooms over cash in wedding cards after 'incidents'

Gardai have issued a warning to all soon to be married couples after a number of cash envelopes were stolen at an Irish wedding reception.

The incident, which urged Sgt John Kelly of Fermoy Garda Station to take to the airwaves to warn others, occurred in Co Cork recently.

Sgt Kelly told C103’s Today Show with Patricia Messinger that the crime has become more common following the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said gardai had received numerous reports of cards being taken from hotel rooms and urged newlywed couples to have a plan in place for their big day.

Sgt Kelly said: “I'm not going to say where or when it happened.

"We're back with weddings post covid, and more and more people are going to weddings," reports Cork Beo.

"The bride and groom need to have a plan in place and see who is looking after the money on their happy day.

"You don't want to have a happy day turn into an unhappy day.

"This happened recently when an amount of those cards were stolen in an incident.

"I've heard of it in the past, and it's one of those horror stories, but nowadays, the bride and groom could be depending on that money to pay for the wedding.

"The first that some people think of at a wedding is to get rid of the card because they're aware of the cash and want to let their hair down. But just make sure that you have a plan in place to deal with it on the day."

Patricia also noted that many hotels will keep them in their safe at request, an option that many couples will now seriously consider.
