Gardaí in urgent warning to drivers with fake driving licence scheme doing the rounds

Drivers are being warned not to shell out large amounts of cash for fake licences.

The warning comes amid reports of a fake licence scheme operating in certain parts of the country with gardaí advising of the serious legal implications of engaging with such a practice.

They have pointed out that paying for a licence in this way is illegal and a serious criminal offence.

Waterford/Kilkenny/Carlow gardaí initiated the warning following the seizure of a number of fake driving licences in the region recently.

Gardai have taken to social media to get their warning across.

“There are numerous posts online offering fake driving licences for a not insubstantial fee. This may initially appear attractive to someone having difficulty in passing a test but we have to give some serious words of warning," a garda spokesperson said.

"A fake license is exactly that even if it is of superb quality, the driver number cannot be matched on the NDLS system. If you drive with a fake license, or no license, you are driving uninsured, a serious offence on top of the no driving licence offence.

“Possession of a fake license is also a fraud offence, a serious criminal matter in fact. And finally, we now routinely scan licenses on a mobility device which highlights such imitations."
