Gardai in three month checkpoint warning as many drivers stung in operation

Gardai have issued a warning to one midlands county about “planned activities” in their area.

It comes as part of their Winter Phase of Operation Thor and includes checkpoints and other searches.

A number of “activities” have been arranged by Gardai in Co Offaly, a spokesperson confirmed earlier this week.

Offaly is set to see a number of moves from Gardai as part of Operation Thor’s winter phase, which targets criminal activity and aims to prevent the likes of burglaries and the sale of illegal narcotics.

The operation, which has been in place for years, saw 14 arrests made in Offaly in just one day of action on Wednesday, October 5, with others coming down the line.

A spokesperson told the Irish Mirror that this was the first of a “number of planned activities by Gardai in Offaly in support of the Winter Phase of Operation Thor”.

Tullamore, Clara and Edenderry were targeted first and hit with searches, patrols and checkpoints.

The spokesperson said: “Six residential properties were searched under warrant at locations in Clara and Edenderry targeting the sale and supply of illegal drugs, resulting in the seizure of drugs worth in excess of €12,000 and the arrest of three persons.

"Five people sought in relation to an incident of Violent Disorder in Tullamore in July were arrested and charged before the courts and two further arrests were made as part of ongoing investigations into theft and drugs related matters.

"In addition, four bench warrants were executed before Tullamore District Court.

"Throughout the day crime and burglary patrols, both covert and high visibility, were carried out along with a series of checkpoints. A number of road traffic and crime related detections were made."

Exactly when the following checkpoints, searches and patrols will take place is not clear.
