Gardai highlight clip from Ryan Tubridy's RTE show as he speaks on checkpoint drama

Ryan Tubridy shared heartwarming texts from members of the public thanking gardai for their work at checkpoints across Ireland.

Officers are manning dozens of checkpoints as part of Operation Fanacht, ensuring people avoid taking unnecessary journeys outside their own county.

And An Garda Siochana's official Twitter account highlighted a clip from Tubridy's RTE Radio One show where several people wrote in to express their gratitude.

Reading out texts from grateful listeners, Ryan said: "Talking about being nice in the pandemic, Michelle says: 'I'm a teacher going from Cavan to Meath, I got stopped at a checkpoint and the Garda wished me a nice day with a lovely friendly smile, and it really helps in these difficult mornings'.

Ryan went on: "I know people are stopped in the queues and everyone's just trying to get it right, so good luck to everybody."

While another listener wrote in to say: "Shout out please to all the Gardai manning checkpoints, especially the very pleasant ones at Hackballscross, Co Louth. I'm sure they would rather be doing anything else but I appreciate what they do to us."

And Tubridy wanted to make sure the messages of support were sent to all gardai manning checkpoints across the country.

He added: "I hope they hear that and I hope people realise that people are contacting us to say thanks".
