Gardai have 'near-miss' with drunk motorist driving on the wrong side of the road

Gardai in Cork City had a close call with a motorist who was drink driving on the wrong side of the road.

Members of the force were out for an early morning patrol when they came across the vehicle.

They had a "near-miss" when the car approached them on the wrong side of the road.

It appears the incident occurred on the bend of the Parnell Bridge between Lapps Quay and Union Quay.

Luckily, a collision was avoided but the driver of the car was then asked to complete a roadside breath test.

The motorist failed the test, meaning they were driving over the legal limit for alcohol.

The legal limit for fully licenced drivers is 50 milligrammes of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

The individual was arrested by Gardai, and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A garda spokesman said they would not be providing any further details on the incident.
