Gardai forced to shoot dog after officer bitten during dramatic robbery in Dublin

Gardaí were forced to shoot a dog after an officer was bitten while trying to arrest a man who had robbed two businesses with a gun in Dublin on Monday.

Shortly after 12 noon, a lone male armed with a hand gun entered a shop in Rialto.

He threatened staff before leaving the scene with a sum of cash.

Moments later a man entered a supermarket and post office in the Kilmainham area.

The man subsequently threatened staff before leaving the scene with a quantity of cigarettes.

No one was physically harmed in either incident.

In the course of a follow up operation local Detectives and armed Garda members searched a house in the Inchicore area last evening.

There, they arrested a man in his 20s in connection with both incidents.

He is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939 at Kevin Street Garda Station.

During the process, one officer was bitten in the genital area by a pitbull.

A Garda firearm was subsequently discharged as a result.

One Garda member was injured in the attack.

They have been receiving medical treatment.

The dog has been removed for veterinary treatment.

Investigations are continuing into the incidents.
