Gardai find someone at lockdown checkpoint out for a different kind of exercise

With the majority of the country at home due to Level 5 restrictions, Gardai around the country are still out on Irish roads as they ensure that the rules and regulations about social-distancing are being adhered to.

Recently, more than 50 motorists were fined for using their mobile phone while driving, speeding or refusing to use the seatbelt in a major operation on Tuesday.

Operation Impact took place in Carlow and Wexford to clamp down on road safety and a number of issues were found.

Elsewhere, An Garda Síochána have also recommenced Operation Fanacht which is a nationwide policing operation that's focused on supporting public compliance with public health measures.

With the Gardai continuing to encourage people to adhere to national public health measures, one checkpoint in Kiltealy, Wexford got a very unexpected visitor.

In a post to their official site, the local Gardai said: "Garda Alex O'Hanlon of Enniscorthy Garda Station on a "Operation Fanacht" checkpoint this morning in Kiltealy where he met this gentleman out exercising his horse within 5km! Thankfully, all compliant on the Wexford/Carlow border this morning."

As always, An Garda Síochána is encouraging people not to travel out of their county unless it is for essential purposes and with major checkpoints on main routes, people using the roads are likely to face delays.
