Gardai find 'nothing of evidential value' as new dig for missing Deirdre Jacobs ends

A fresh search in the hopes of finding evidence in relation to missing Deirdre Jacobs has ended.

Gardai say that "nothing of evidential value" was discovered following the dig at a woodlands in Kildare.

The new search was sparked after a man claimed he saw an individual dragging something from the boot of a car into the woods 23 years ago.

This incident was alleged to have occurred on the evening of the 18-year-old's disappearance on July 28, 1998.

It is understood the man previously came forward to gardai with that information years ago – and he has since been interviewed again in recent times in connection with what he witnessed.

The man’s claims formed the basis for the huge three-week Garda search at the site, which is located some 15km from Newbridge, where Ms Jacob was last seen.

Gardai had also hoped that the search could help with other missing persons investigations - such as the case of Jo Jo Dullard - who vanished nearby three years earlier.

But in a statement issued on Tuesday, officers confirmed that the dig has concluded.

A spokesman said: "The search of a site of a wooded area of interest in Co Kildare has now been completed.

"Nothing of evidential value to these investigations was recovered.

"An Garda Síochána continues to keep the families involved updated on the progress of these investigations.

"While the search has been completed, Gardaí remain at the scene to complete necessary site works on these private lands.

"During the course of the search the remnants of a previously undiscovered historical settlement were identified and the National Monuments Service have been notified.

"An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time."

Eight women disappeared between 1993 and 1998 in areas around the borders of Leinster.
