Gardai find more than 40 retailers, pubs and restaurants breaking Covid rules

Over 40 retail outlets, pubs and restaurants have been caught allegedly breaching Covid rules in the last three weeks.

Since the last update on November 19, gardai have found 22 licensed premises that 'broke' Government rules under Operation Navigation.

And 21 shops were caught not adhering to strict measures imposed nationwide as part of Operation Treoraím.

While the vast majority of people across the country are still co-operating with guidelines, there were 20 alleged breaches of the Health Act 1947 under the same period.

To date, Gardai have initiated 517 Covid-related prosecutions.

Since the new law came in, three people have been given a fixed penalty fine for not wearing a face covering.

Meanwhile, there have been nine breaches referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions, with one prosecution already underway.

Speaking today, Deputy Commissioner, Policing and Security, John Twomey said: "These figures show high compliance levels from the public during Level 5. We would like to thank the public for this.

"However, while more activities are now allowed under Level 3, it is vital that we don’t become complacent.

"We all need to wear face masks where appropriate, maintain social distancing, and limit our number of contacts.

"Along with washing our hands, these are best ways of keeping ourselves, loved ones and neighbours safe so we can have a healthy and happy Christmas.

"An Garda Síochána knows that Christmas can be a difficult and stressful time for some people.

"Over the coming weeks, Gardaí across the country will be actively engaging with people who feel isolated or vulnerable.

"If you know of anyone who needs assistance with anything or a socially distanced chat, please contact your local Garda station. We are here to help.”
