Gardai find knife close to scene where young man was stabbed to death in Co Clare

Gardai investigating the fatal stabbing of a man found a knife close to the scene yesterday.

A 32-year-old, named locally as Eoin Boylan, died following an altercation at Gordon Drive in Ennis, Co Clare, on Tuesday afternoon.

Gardai were called to a “serious assault that occurred between two men” at around 3pm.

One suffered serious injuries while the other is understood to have left the area. The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A man, who is understood to be a foreign national in his late 30s, later presented himself to Ennis Garda station where he was arrested.

Yesterday morning, the Clare Garda Divisional Search Team began an operation to try and locate the weapon used in the fatal attack.

The Garda Dog Unit was also involved in the search.

Officers first searched the scene and surrounding area including green spaces, gardens and driveways.

Shortly before 11am, gardai located what’s understood to be a knife in thick scrub on the side of the road along which the alleged attacker is understood to have fled.

The weapon was photographed before being recovered, placed in an evidence bag and taken away for analysis. However, there is no indication whether this is the knife that was used in the alleged attack.

As the search, continues, gardai are also awaiting the results of a postmortem examination which is due to be carried out today at University Hospital Limerick by the State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

Officers have appealed for any witnesses to contact then.

A spokesman said: “We are also asking any road users who may have camera footage to come forward. They can contact 065 6848100.”
