Gardai deny claims jeep carrying Commissioner Drew Harris flipped at Phoenix Park HQ

Gardai have claimed that a faulty security bollard at Garda HQ was the cause of a crash involving a PSNI jeep Commissioner Drew Harris was travelling in last month.

It was reported over the weekend that the jeep Ireland's top cop was travelling flipped over after a garda sentinel hit an emergency button to activate a security barrier, causing the barrier to shoot up from the ground.

Questions had also been raised as to why Commissioner Harris was travelling in a PSNI vehicle.

Normally, armed PSNI officers chauffeur Harris to the border where he then transfers into a Garda car escorted by the Emergency Response Unit (ERU).

But for reasons unknown Harris decided to continue his journey in the PSNI vehicle back to Dublin.

In a statement released this afternoon, gardai said there was no security incident at their Phoenix Park headquarters and that the jeep was hit "at a walking pace" due to the malfunction of a newly installed bollard.

Gardai also maintained that the Commissioner's transport arrangements were within normal procedures.

A garda spokeswoman said: "There was no security incident at Garda HQ on 25 March 2019.

"A newly installed bollard malfunctioned and caught the underside of the vehicle the Commissioner was travelling in.

"This happened at a walking pace. No vehicles were flipped.

"The malfunction was quickly fixed and vehicular traffic went in and out of Garda HQ as normal that day.

"As per our previous statement, normal movement procedures were followed in relation to the Commissioner.”
