Gardaí confirm they are not investigating RTÉ payments issues at this stage

Gardaí say they are not investigating any issues connected with the RTÉ payments scandal – at this stage.

There had been calls for the force to begin a scoping exercise to see if there was any possibility that any criminal offence had been committed after the bombshell revelation that bosses had paid star presenter Ryan Tubridy tens of thousands of euro via an account in Britain.

There is no suggestion Mr Tubridy was involved in any wrongdoing.

One of the calls for a Garda examination came from former Defence Minister Willie O'Dea.

The matter is set to be examined by a Government-ordered review, but gardai have told The Irish Mirror that officers are not investigating any issues connected to it yet.

A spokesman told us: "An Garda Síochána is not examining any of these issues at this time."

The RTÉ payments controversy continues to dominate headlines, with director-general Dee Forbes announcing her resignation with immediate effect yesterday morning.

Tubridy, meanwhile, remains off the air this week as RTE made the "editorial call" to have Oliver Callan guest-host the popular radio show in Tubridy's place.
