Gardai confirm identity of body found in woods in Rusheen Bay, Galway in 2014

A mystery over the identity of a man whose body was found in woods in 2014 has been solved.

Gardai and international police forces carried out a number appeals after the grim discovery in Rusheen Bay, near Galway city.

But it has now been confirmed the man was Polish and while his name has not been released, his family in Poland have
been contacted.

A key found on the man led to the identity of the deceased, whose death has been treated as a personal tragedy.

Gardai believe he flew from Poland to the US in the early 1990s and in 2014 he travelled to Ireland just a few weeks before his body was found.

His body was found by a dog walker on September 27, 2014. Foul play was not suspected and the man did not carry any ID.

Dr Christopher Rynn, from the University of Dundee, carried out a forensic analysis on the remains and was provided with a 3D scan of the skull to reconstruct his face.

The man was described as being between 43 and 48, of a large build and wearing a leather jacket.

The circumstances surrounding the death will be heard at a sitting of Galway Coroner’s Court in the coming months.

It is unknown if the body will be repatriated.
