Gardai confident more people will be charged over killing of 17-year-old Keane Mulready-Woods

Gardai are confident more people will be charged over the killing of 17-year-old Keane Mulready-Woods.

A comprehensive file on the case has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions and senior officers are hoping a decision will be made in the near future.

So far two people – Gerard Cruise, 47, and Paul Crosby – both neighbours of the dead youngster in Drogheda’s Rathmullen Park estate – have been charged with murder.

However, a total of 13 people have been arrested and brought in for questioning including a handful of women.

Keane vanished on January 12 last year. Twenty-four hours later some of his remains were dumped in a sports bag on a housing estate in Coolock, Dublin, and also the following day in a burnt-out car in Drumcondra.

His torso was then found on wasteland last April not far from the house where it is believed he was killed.

A Garda source said: ”We are confident more people will be charged over Keane’s death.

“There are three parts to the investigation – his abduction, his murder and then the clean-up and disposal of his body parts.

“A large number of people were involved willingly or unwillingly.

“We have made a number of recommendations to the DPP and are waiting for a response. Hopefully some will be charged with murder and others with aiding and abetting. It is a very comprehensive file and the final decision on charges rests with the DPP.”

Gardai suspect Keane was personally responsible for a number of petrol and pipe bomb attacks on houses around the town.

Officers also revealed they are still not 100% sure where two brothers, who are key suspects, are hiding out abroad.

They were last reported in Turkey but locals who know the family believe they have since fled to Central America.

The pair, aged 28 and 25, fled Drogheda weeks after the teenager’s murder. They were due to stand trial at the time on a number of serious criminal offences.

Warrants have been issued for their arrest in this country but so far no European Arrest or International Arrest Warrant has been issued.

But the Garda source added: “When they see a crime boss the calibre of Gerry Hutch being arrested in Spain, they know we will get them at some stage. It is only a question of time, they can run but they can’t hide.”

The Keane Mulready-Woods murder trial will take place in the Special Criminal Court next year.
