Gardai chase down cyclist on motorway as they slam dangerous behaviour

Gardai in Kilkenny have criticised the "extremely irresponsible" actions of a cyclist who they stopped on a motorway recently.

The man was spotted pedalling on the M9 motorway, which is not allowed under road traffic laws.

He was taken off the road by Kilkenny Roads Policing Unit, with his behaviour leading to a warning by gardai to other road users.

In a post on Facebook, gardai covering the Kilkenny and Carlow region slammed the cyclist's "dangerous" actions.

They said: "Kilkenny Roads Policing Unit took this cyclist off the M9 recently.

"Not only is it an offence, but it was extremely irresponsible and dangerous. Think Road Safety."

Members of the public also condemned the cyclist for his dangerous route, calling his behaviour "unacceptable" and "brainless".

One person said: "It's scary how few people know the rules of the road especially on motorways. I saw a man running on the motorway one morning.

"And no his car hadn't broken down somewhere. He was out for a run and no better place for him only a motorway."

Another added: "I have often seen this and said this in the past so finally it's being addressed, so dangerous."

Gardai across the country were busy over the Bank Holiday weekend carrying out checkpoints which saw multiple drivers arrested for drink driving.

Roads policing units in Dublin carried out 16 big checkpoints, testing 400 motorists.

Nine drivers were arrested for failed tests and now face disqualification and heavy fines.

Officers carried out a high-visibility road policing enforcement operation over the August weekend, targeting lifesaver offences, including speed, seatbelts and drug driving.

An Garda Siochana posted on Twitter: "Roads Policing Units in Dublin carried out 16 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints over the holiday weekend, testing 400 motorists for alcohol and drugs.

"9 drivers were arrested for failed tests and now face disqualification and heavy fines."
